In the Enki program, in
both the Homeschool and the Classroom, these stories form the core
of all studies. Those wishing to purchase several books
will find significant savings in our Grade
Level Curriculum Packages.
In keeping with
the lively way young children perceive nature, this collection
includes many stories that have been written specifically to
bring scientific phenomena to life. Whether telling of the
water cycle as Old Mother Raincloud sends her children forth
as rain and calls them home as mist, or of the Crystal Queen
who changes the seasons and leaves her icicles treasures behind,
we work with everyday phenomenon to spark the child's own powers
of both observation and appreciation. Strengthening this “living
sense” of scientific phenomena in the early years, creates
a strong foundation for later intellectual exploration. In
this way, from the earliest years the scientific processes,
facts and formulae, are experienced within the living ecosystem
of which they are a part..
To strengthen the experience of the cyclic
processes of nature, we encourage teachers to chose some core
seasonal stories and repeat them yearly; therefore, this Kindergarten
collection is also used in Grades One and Two.

The First Grader
is ready to take up science in a more focused manner, but still
within a life filled ecosystem. This collection includes many
stories that have been written specifically to bring scientific
phenomena to life in just this context. Whether flying with
the Monarch on her pilgrimage to Mexico and back, or stretching
out to meet the winter stars with Grandmother Elm, we work
with everyday phenomenon to spark the child's own powers of
observation and appreciation of the interdependent world in
which we live. Strengthening this “living sense” of
scientific phenomena in the early years creates a strong foundation
for later intellectual exploration.
To strengthen the experience
of the cyclic processes of nature, we encourage teachers
to chose some core seasonal stories and
repeat them yearly; therefore, the Kindergarten collection
is used as part of the Grades One curriculum - if you do not
already
have it, we encourage purchasing the two together for $80.

Nature Stories:
Two-Book Set (Kindergarten & Grade One)

This two volume collection of nature stories is designed to support and educate both adult and child as they explore the natural world around them. Seasonal stories are designed to deepen the child's experience of the cyclic quality of nature. As a result, the vast majority of nature stories that are enjoyed in Kindergarten are also recommended for Grade One. Therefore, this set includes books for both grades and we recommend choosing some to read year after year as the particular nature phenomena highlighted rolls back around.
Second grade Nature
Stories include a focus on energetic phenomena that mirror the lively,
mischievous nature of the second grader: flood, blizzard, fire, tornado,
earthquake, and so on. Whether racing downhill with a thunderous avalanche,
twisting wildly with the tornado's spin, or bending gracefully with
the corn under hurricane's pounding rain, the lively Grade Two Nature
Stories give the child a chance to explore natural phenomenon so like
their own energy at this age. Through this deep engagement, these
stories spark the child's own powers of observation and appreciation
of the interdependent world in which we live, and their place within
it. Strengthening this “living
sense” of scientific phenomena in the early years creates a strong
foundation for later intellectual exploration.
Along with these adventurous stories, this Grade
Two collection includes some seasonal stories from Grade
One and Kindergarten. Whether hearing these for the first time,
or hearing them again, the cyclic nature of the stories - and
their retelling - offer a balance to the more wild Grade Two stories,
reassuring the child of the dependability of nature’s
processes.

Folk and Fairy Tales

The First Grader
is hungry to know that she can venture out into the world,
face its challenges, and both discover and fulfill her potential – returning
home in her fullness, as “Queen.” This collection
of over 70 Fairy Tales from around the world takes the child
on this universal human quest.
The Second Grader is simultaneously
full of curiosity and mischief, and eager to see human greatness.
To meet these longings, we now offer the first 2 books of a 4
book series, with stories of 10 sages and over 100 Trickster
Tales between them (5 sages & 50+ trickster tales per book).
This series presents the child with a mirror of his boisterous
nature, and a chance to see that very curiosity and liveliness
transformed into the compassionate action of a sage. To help
the child experience his unlimited potential, we have chosen
sages who span time, culture, and social activity
– from
social/political issues, to religion, to the sciences, to the
arts.
At its core, mathematical thinking
lies in seeing the myriad patterns in the world around us and
how these interrelate. In keeping with the young child’s
natural interest in relationships and patterns, this collection
of stories and activities brings basic mathematical concepts
to life. In Grade One our focus is on the nature of number, comparison
(greater/ less, odd/even, and so on), and the four computational
processes (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
This two book collection includes two books* of stories and hands
on activities, and a CD of story-based worksheets. Together these
bring the child through a rich immersion in the living nature
of mathematics, on to an ease with the nuts and bolts of simple
calculation *(those purchasing packages do not receive the Mathematics
Fairy Tales Collection as these stories are in their Grade One
Fairy Tales Collection.)
In Grade Two we continue to focus
on the world of relationships so central to mathematical thinking
- and to the child at this age. We begin with a new set of stories
and activities designed to firm up the learning begun in Grade
One. This forms a strong base for the core undertaking of Grade
Two: an exploration of place value (ones, tens, hundreds, etc.).
Place value underlies our entire mathematical system and - although
it is second nature to adults - this is a complex concept. This
collection of stories and activities brings both the review work
and the study of place value to life. It includes a book of stories
and hands on activities, and a CD of story-based worksheets.
